Are you thinking about starting an online business? If you dream about creating an online income you are not alone. Many people would love to make money on the internet today.

You can quickly fall into the trap of thinking it is easier to start an online business and make money than with a traditional one. This simply is not the case and the major reason why can be summed up in one word, TRAFFIC.

In the off-line world traffic jams can be tough on a business. In the online world you can never have enough traffic coming to your website.

As a matter of fact most people fail in their online business because they never develop enough quality traffic to their website. In reality many of them never develop any traffic at all.

Once you get your website established, and have the product you want to promote, you should spend the majority of your time on advertising and marketing. However, it is amazing how many people waste time and pretends they are working.

There certainly are enough distractions on the internet. You can surf the internet all day long and really have a lot of fun doing it. You can watch videos, listen to iTunes, read people’s blog posts, and so on. All of this is fun but it is doing nothing to help you promote your online business.

You will never achieve an income level you want because you never work at promoting your business. I would encourage you to actually establish a budget right now before you even start your business.

Your budget should describe exactly how you’re going to spend money on advertising and marketing. What do you do if you don’t have money to spend right now?

There are many free or nearly free advertising methods that people have used to promote their business when they first start out. There are literally thousands of examples of people who become successful online and did not have a large advertising budget when they first started.

You can promote online in various ways and invest only your time as opposed to investing money. Traffic exchanges, article marketing, social marketing, blogging, discussion forums, and so on are all ways you can generate traffic and not spend money doing it.

In summary, starting an online business is not hard to do. Developing an online income is a harder task. The only way you will be successful is if you develop major traffic to your site and spend the adequate amount of time and money doing it.
