The ideal way to look at online business is that perfect recipe of two parts common sense, one part experience, and one part research. Knowing your business is what I call my personal experience.

I make a point of educating myself as much as possible about successful online businesses. I always strive to balance out the proven methods of success with the up and coming new strategies. It’s great of course to know what’s out there and to do the research, but what so many business owners lack is common sense.

I’m not an Internet marketing expert. SEO and SEM are just abbreviations to me; I could next claim to be a guru who specializes in the use of any of the popular Internet acronyms. If anyone could actually be an expert, it would totally overwhelm me as the rules and techniques for Internet marketing seem to change by the second. I’m like the rest of my online peers; I just try and learn everything I can about pulling in customers and managing my online business.

One of my biggest weaknesses is that when it comes to working for my clients and me, I often find that I get caught up in the technical specifications that go along with running an online business. It seems like everyone is always trying to tell all of us who have online businesses how we can increase our web traffic and find more sales leads. By no means do I mean to imply this advice is not well intended, but I think you should research marketing techniques for yourself and utilize what you know about the basics of online business.

There are no new marketing strategies that I have to share with you, and I certainly can’t promise that you will soon be earning more money than you have ever dreamed of in your life. What I am saying is that you should carefully review new online business tips before you implement them.

What if the tips conflict with your website style and possible harm the relationship you have with your customers? If you’re not sure if the tips are beneficial, then you can always ask someone you trust to take a look at the new concepts.

The website you use for your Internet business should be designed in such a way that a techie will not be appalled and a non-techie can still use it easily. It would be great if this world was perfect, and every individual was computer whiz. That is not the case though. That is why your web page must be convenient and easy to use.

A great deal of thought and effort went into my website design. I considered the message I wanted to convey and how it needed to be conveyed as well as what, if anything, I wanted my website to do. These are considerations that must be made; this is definitely something that you want to do. Nothing is perfect though so don’t be surprised if later on you realize you might need to alter something on your site.

Friends and family members are great feedback givers. After I had my site up for two days, I knew what I had designed well and where my design skills were lacking. I realized that my site was a little too complicated for some of the older generation, especially my grandfather who was nearing a 100 but still enjoyed doing things on the computer.

Well after talking to my friends and family, I knew I had to review my website, and I did. I made sure that every page in my site could be accessed at least two ways. Along the way, I also attempted to make things simpler. I kept the text or copy the same because my copy was one of my strengths; I had written content that came across as inviting to my site visitors.

I had also utilized my knowledge of marketing techniques enough to get my keywords pulled up on search engines but not so much that I came across as a repetitive person who was doing nothing but trying to sell a product.

The great Einstein is noted for saying, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler.” This is a fact that anyone who is running an online business should note.

Everybody want to be bright and vivid, with tons of flair in order to increase traffic and move up in search engine rankings, but generally – simplicity is best. If people cannot use your site, that’s all they will ever have to say about it.
